10 inground pool design ideas

You may not realize it, but there are a few different ways a pool can be built. One of the most popular types is the inground pool. With this type of pool, the water’s surface is level with your lawn, and a walkway or barrier separates it from your grass. Inground pools last significantly longer and are considered a far better investment than other types.

Their longevity and pleasant appearance make inground pools the most common backyard pool style. They may be common, but there are plenty of ways you can customize yours. Let’s explore ten custom pool design ideas that will make your inground pool stand out.

1. Light it up

Submersible LED lights can make midnight swims more impressive. Colour-changing LEDs provide a beautiful ambiance, and they’re great for parties. Try seasonal colours like red and white for Canada Day or school colours for a graduation party.

You could also add a few accent LEDs to illuminate waterfalls, decorative plants, or swim bars. Placing a line of lights along your pool edge is a good safety feature for late-night swimmers.

If you don’t want lights underwater, put them near your pool for ambient lighting. These may include outdoor lamps, fairy light strings, or floating LED orbs.

2. Create fire features

Instead of LED lights, you can illuminate your pool with fire. Torches, fire pits, and fire bowls fit tropical-themed pools and let you enjoy your pool as the temperature gets lower.

Fire-water fountains are impressive poolside features that your guests won’t soon forget. Combine a fire-water fountain with an infinity pool to create a chic reflective surface. Firewalls are also trending right now, and they add a beautiful accent to your pool’s edges.

3. Add a spa

Incorporating a spa with a pool project is a wonderful idea.  Soothe away your aches and pains after a hard day’s work or relax after swimming laps in the pool.  Either way allow the powerful jets to clear your mind, relax your body and massage your tired muscles.

The addition of a spa can lengthen your swimming season.  Swim a few laps in the pool with the temperature between 780 to 840 then crank up the heat in the spa to 1020 to warm up and relax.

4. Make it an infinity pool

Vanishing edges are particularly impressive on an inground pool. They can make your pool seem one with your ground or like glass-like on your deck. If your yard overlooks a body of natural water, it can create the illusion that your pool is blending into the natural water.

Pair accent statues, lights, fire features, and fountains with your infinity pool. The pool’s glassy appearance is extra reflective, so it will further accentuate these elements.

This design allows for some pool water overflow. Overflow is caught in a basin, filtered, and recycled back into your pool. You won’t lose any water if you choose an infinity pool, but this is a unique feature of theirs that you should keep in mind.

5. Turn it into a natural-looking oasis

Rock waterfalls, decorative plants, and natural wooden pool decks can make your pool look rustic. Try pairing a cascading waterfall with a raised wall to turn your inground pool into a secluded retreat.

Grottos also increase your pool’s likeness to the ocean. Some people add slides or staircases to their grottos so they can slide alongside their beautiful waterfall. Add some submerged furniture to let your swimmers relax in the grotto’s shade.

6.  Decorate the tiles

Most pools have light blue tiles to brighten your water. Alternative colours and tile mosaics are a growing trend among pool owners. Black, gray, green, and deep blue pool tiles are all growing in popularity.

Light blue or white tiles with a mural or mosaic also make your pool stand out. The design possibilities are endless and can make your inground pool blend with the rest of your landscape design seamlessly.

7.  Add a swim-up bar

A cold beer, summer cocktail, or refreshing soft drink can really top off a day by the pool. Swim-up bars include submerged seating and patio furniture so folks inside and outside of the pool can toast the day.

Feel free to serve snacks at your swim-up bar, too. Many folks love them for barbecues and kids’ birthday parties with cake. They can also save you yard space since you may not need to designate a separate area for outdoor hors d’oeuvres.

8. Make it kid-friendly

Waterslides, basketball or volleyball nets, and jumping rocks turn your pool into a playground. Kids love being able to leap into their backyard pools during summer vacation. Add features that let them release energy and encourage them to invite friends over.

9. Let your pets take a dive

Inground pools are more accessible to pets. If swimming with your buddy sounds like fun, you can design your pool for that! Be aware that gunite concrete pools are better for pets than vinyl. Pet claws quickly scratch vinyl surfaces.

Consider a removable fence for your pool if your pet spends time in your yard unsupervised. It’s best to keep an eye on your pet as they swim. The removable fence creates a barrier that prevents them from jumping in without supervision.
